Without a doubt, the best in the city is from T&F Farmers’ Pride, conveniently located within shouting distance of Helix’s world headquarters. Bring cash, because they don’t take checks or cards. Be sure not to expose yourself as an out-of-towner by ordering mayo on the bun. Pick up some Herr’s Sour Cream and Onion potato chips, and a Tastykake while you’re there.
If you’re in search of something more exotic, head down to another Philadelphia institution, Vietnam Restaurant on North 11th, and get yourself a bowl of BUN CHA GIO. It’s crispy spring rolls on a bed of rice noodles, fresh and pickled vegetables, and a banging dipping sauce. Don’t skimp on the sriracha.
Next time you go into the Wawa and reach for a Snickers, do yourself a favor and opt for a Peanut Chew instead, the Philadelphia candy that was invented in 1917. They’re delicious, family-owned, and made in the shadow of the Tacony-Palmyra bridge.
And finally, yes, we do eat cheesesteaks–Not ‘Philadelphia Cheese Steak Sandwiches’– cheesesteaks. If somebody is selling them with Philadelphia in the name, it ain’t a cheesesteak. You already know the lore and have been taught how to order them, but you’re going to the wrong place. Go to Dalessandro’s on Ridge Avenue. You’ll thank us as you fade in and out of your food coma.
